Caerwent Field trip

On 3 June, Society members undertook a visit to Caerwent, known to the Romans as Venta Silurum, near Newport.

Caerwent was established in about AD 75–80 and served as a settlement of the Silures, a native tribe who became Romanised following the conquest of Britain.

The visit was ably led by Dr Sian Rees, retired Cadw inspector whose detailed knowledge of the town’s Roman history and remains was fascinating. Despite the very hot weather, members were able to walk around a section of the town walls, visit the market place and remains of a Romano-British temple. The visit ended with lunch at a local pub.
